How to Polish Smooth Leather Shoes
A quick polish can freshen the look of smooth leather shoes. The first step is to make sure the product is suited to the leather you have: suede, nubuck and some delicate or coated finishes need different care.
Before you start
Brush or wipe away loose dirt with a soft, clean cloth. If the shoes are damp, let them dry naturally before applying polish. Check the care instructions for the shoes and the polish, and test a small area that is not obvious.
Apply a little at a time
With a suitable cloth or applicator, spread a thin layer of polish over the smooth leather. Follow the polish maker’s directions for drying and buffing. Use a clean brush or cloth to bring up the shine. Separate cloths for different polish colours help avoid transferring colour between pairs.
Colour matters: a mismatched polish may alter how the shoe looks. When you are unsure, ask which product is suitable for the specific finish. Polish also does not turn a non-waterproof shoe into a waterproof one.
